Most hair damage doesn't happen at the salon — it happens at home, through daily habits that seem harmless but accumulate into serious damage over time. The good news is that most of these mistakes are easy to correct once you know what to look for.

1. Washing Too Often

Shampooing every day strips the scalp of its natural sebum, the oil that keeps hair shaft smooth and protected. For most hair types, washing two to three times a week is sufficient. On off-days, dry shampoo or a hair mist can refresh without stripping.

2. Skipping Conditioner

Conditioner is not optional — it's the step that reseals the hair cuticle after cleansing. Shampoo opens the cuticle to remove dirt; conditioner closes it back down. Skipping this leaves the cuticle rough and open, leading to frizz, tangles, and breakage.

3. Towel-Roughing Wet Hair

Wet hair is at its most fragile. The vigorous towel-drying motion most people use creates friction that snaps hair fibers. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and use a microfiber towel or soft cotton t-shirt to blot dry.

4. Heat Without Protection

Blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons all apply temperatures that exceed 150°C — enough to cause protein degradation in the hair shaft. A heat protectant product applied before styling creates a thermal barrier that absorbs and disperses that heat.

5. Ignoring Your Scalp

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. A scalp that's dry, oily, or inflamed will produce hair that reflects those conditions. Regular scalp massage (even just two minutes while shampooing) improves circulation and promotes healthy follicle function. A nourishing hair cream used on the lengths also helps maintain moisture from root to tip.
